Music 109 details and notes from the MiraCosta catalog Prerequisites: None Acceptable for Credit: CSU,.UC Lecture 3 hours.(1004.00) Music theory is taught through guitar applications. Melody, rhythm, harmony, scales, improvisation, chord theory, and the fingerboard will be covered. This course is specially designed for guitarists who want to understand rudimentary music theory and apply it to guitar. The overriding goal of the class is to teach introductory topics of music theory as realized through the guitar[see additional syllabus pages for topic outline]. The class is designed to help guitar players comprehend elementary music theory and apply it on the guitar. This class will also prepare the student for further music theory study. This class has proven to give the student a firm foundation if they wish to major in music. The class is not designed as a performance class. This means that the student will not be graded on their ability to perform any of the topics taught in the class nor will they be required to prove their comprehension of any of the topics by playing them on the instrument. The guitar is strictly a practice tool. The text book and the majority of the assignments are designed to be played as well written out. The student will better understand the topic if they take the time to try to play some, if not all, of the homework on the guitar daily. Be sure to bring the guitar to class so it can be used to teach the topics.
